In some of Enhanced Oil Recovery projects, nitrogen can also be used to flood marginal fields, more commonly using water flooding or chemical/surfactant flooding. The purity needs of the used nitrogen depends on field requirements and most importantly, eliminates the risk of explosions and fire. In the oil industry, Nitrogen is commonly used in high volumes and at higher pressures, at a minimum of 95% purity, for pipeline pigging to keep the lines clear, and for well injection to push product to the wellhead for extraction.
